The Gans Grizzlies have already clinched a home field playoff game, but they’ll be looking to enter the postseason on a positive note when they close the regular season on Thursday night at Arkoma.
Kickoff at the Mustangs’ field is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Gans clinched second place in District B-4 with a 52-24 win over Welch last Friday. The Grizzlies are 6-3 overall and 6-1 in the league while Arkoma is 1-8 and 0-7.
Arkoma defeated Bokoshe in the season-opener, but the Mustangs have dropped eight in a row since then. They fell to Summit Christian, 40-14, last week.
Gans head coach Trent Holt knows his team will be favored to win, but doesn’t want the Grizzlies getting over-confident.
“We have to be ready to play. The kids know we beat them pretty bad last year, but we still have to take care of business,” said Holt. “On paper, we should win this one, but it’s football and anything can happen. We’re not looking past anyone.”
Holt said the Grizzlies are relatively healthy going into the game. Only fullback Devin Brown is expected to miss the contest as he continues to recover from a head injury.
“He’s a sophomore and he’s pretty disappointed, but his health is more important than football,” said Holt.
The Grizzlies have been led in recent weeks by Mike Royal. The senior quarterback missed the early part of the season, but has now accounted for more than 1,300 yards of offense. Royal has run the football 89 times for 903 yards and 15 touchdowns and completed 27 of 54 passes for 474 yards and five scores.
This will be the sixth-consecutive season for Gans and Arkoma to meet on the football field and the Grizzlies have yet to lose in the series. Gans won 58-12 in 2008.
“We just want to go over there and be focused, take care of business and get ready for the playoffs,” said Holt.
