Roland Goes 1-1 At State Tourney

OKLAHOMA CITY - Roland advanced to the Class 5A semifinals, but could not overcome a rough inning against Blanchard on Wednesday at the slowpitch softball state tournament.

The third-ranked Lady Rangers opened the day with a 9-2 rout of Newcastle before losing to eventual champion Blanchard 16-5 in the second round at the ASA Hall of Fame complex.

Roland, which was making its third consecutive appearance at the state tourney, closed its season with a record of 26-10.

The Lady Lions took control of Wednesday evening's semifinal contest by building a a 14-0 lead in the top of the third inning and hanging on to advance to the championship game.

Hallie Ledbetter and Blair Brooks cracked two-run doubles during the big inning as Blanchard went through its batting order. Katie McCloskey added a two-RBI single before Alma Breckenridge belted a two-run homer to close the scoring in the third.

Blanchard tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth, but the Lady Rangers fought back with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Maggie Kolp, Ericka Edwards and Chelsea Matlock led off with singles to load the bases. Molly Gordon drove in Kolp and Kensey Clark followed her with an RBI single. Jamie Morgan made it 16-4 with a two-run triple to deep left field and she scored from third on Linzie Roberts' single.

Blanchard, which entered the tournament ranked No. 2 in 5A, eventually got out of the inning and retired Roland in the bottom of the fifth to win by the run rule.

The Lady Lions went on to win their first state championship on Thursday, edging Morris 2-1.

Roland 9, Newcastle 2

Newcastle was making a bid to reach the state semifinals for the fifth time since 2000, but the Lady Rangers banged out 18 base hits to send the Lady Racers home.

Senior pitcher Linzie Roberts, junior third baseman Maggie Kolp and sophomore second baseman Kensey Clark led the way with three hits apiece as Roland posted the first-round victory.

The Lady Rangers took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Kolp and Ericka Edwards both lined RBI singles past third base.
