Sallisaw Cowboys drop state-tournament opener
It was a tough way to start the 2023 OK Kids Age 12-and-Younger State Tournament, which is going on this week at the Sallisaw Sports Complex, for the Sallisaw Cowboys, who fell 18-0 to the Anadarko Warriors in the winner’s-bracket quarterfinals.
The Cowboys were facing elimination the rest of this week, with their first elimination game coming Tuesday afternoon in a loser’s-bracket first-round game against the Cheyenne-Reydon Bears.
The Cowboys had to not only win Tuesday afternoon, but win tonight and twice Thursday night to become the blue bracket runner-up team to qualify for Friday afternoon’s state championship round, which will start at 1 p.m. The state title game is slated for 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The Warriors scored twice in the first inning and eight runs in both the second and third innings to produce an 18-0 lead.
Anadarko pitching two-hit the Cowboys as Sallisaw’s only hits were a two-out, second-inning single by Jax Waters and a two-out, third-inning single by Calvin Kilpatrick.
Tanner Plank took the loss.
