Vian splits road games at Oktaha, suffer home losses to Westville
The Vian squads split their road games with Oktaha on Thursday night. The Wolverines tamed the Tigers 68–55, but the Lady Tigers downed the Lady Wolverines 64-34.
However, it was a tough Friday night as both teams suffered losses to Westville at B.J. Traw Gymnasium as the Lady Wolverines suffered a 40-37 overtime loss to the Lady Yellowjackets, then the ’Jackets stung the Wolverines 53-48.
In the boys’ win over Oktaha, the Wolverines (7-12) trailed 15-11 after a period, but they outscored the Tigers 18-14 in the second quarter to knot the game at 29-all at halftime. In the second half, Vian outscored Oktaha 39– 26 to complete the come-frombehind victory.
For the game, Yonsi Grass scored a gamehigh 31 points to lead Vian, followed by Masyn Wright and Joe O’Neil with 14 points each, Cash Collins with four points, Jacob Brannick with three points and Trace Sanders with two points.
In the girls’ loss to Oktaha, the Lady Tigers doubled the Lady Wolverines 18-9 in the first quarter en route to a 31-13 halftime lead and a 47-22 advantage going into the final period.
In defeat, Kala Gibbins and Halli Russell each scored seven points to lead the Lady Wolverines (1-17), followed by Shelbie Glass with six points, Kiah Richardson with five points, Rebel Simon, Maisie Wells, Kalli Kennedy and Avery Wright with two points each and Jaden Frazier with a free throw.
In the boys’ loss to Westville, the Wolverines, who trailed 13-9 after a period, outscored the Yellowjackets 17-10 in the second quarter to take a 26 23 halftime lead. However, the ‘Jackets outscored the Wolverines 30 22 in the second half to earn the come-from-behind win.
In defeat, Grass led Vian with a game-high 22 points, followed by Sanders with 15 points, Wright with six points and O’Neil with four points.
In the girls’ loss to Westville, the Lady Yellowjackets had a 12-8 lead after a quarter, a 1711 halftime advantage and a 27-25 lead going into the final period, but the Lady Wolverines used an 8-6 fourth quarter to knot the game at 33all to force overtime. However, in OT, the Lady ’Jackets stung the Lady Wolverines 7-4 to get the win.
In defeat, Wright scored 10 points to lead Vian, followed by Wells and Skyelar Locust with nine points each, Russell with five points, Gibbins with three points and Simon with two points.
