2 Sallisaw wrestlers crowned state champions
4 total Black Diamonds, Lady Wolverine place at state
OKLAHOMA CITY — Two Sallisaw Black Diamonds wrestlers finished their season as a state champion at the Class 4A State Tournament, which took place Thursday through Saturday at Jim Norick State Fair Arena.
Sallisaw 150-pound wrestler Cole Mayfield became a two-time state champion as he defended his Class 3A State Tournament championship from a season ago when he was a Warner Eagle. Mayfield pinned his opponent in the finals.
Sallisaw 106-pounder Cason Craft also won a state title, while teammates Bodie Adams and Noah Flores also placed. Adams was state runner-up at 165 pounds, and Flores, who became Sallisaw’s third wrestler this season to get his 100th career prep victory, was fourth at 215 pounds. As a team, the Black Diamonds, who also were honored for being the academic state runners-up in Class 4A, finished third.
One other local wrestler placed at state as Vian Lady Wolverines senior Avery Richey was third at 135 pounds in the Class 5A State Tournament.
Sallisaw Lady Diamonds senior Hannah Lightfoot was perhaps on her way to place as well, but had to medically forfeit her consolation semifinal match. According to a post made on the Sallisaw Black Diamond Wrestling Facebook page, Lightfoot had to have surgery Saturday at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. Her condition and/ or what caused the medical forfeit was not known at press time.
