Vian is runner-up at Sallisaw Tournament
The Vian Lady Wolverines finished runners-up at the 2024 Sallisaw Tournament, which took place Thursday at the Sallisaw Sports Complex.
The Lady Wolverines lost 12-0 to Pocola in the title game. After losing their two pool play games 7-4 to Eufaula and 14-11 to Heavener, the Lady Wolverines rallied for a 13-12 win over Muldrow in the tournament quarterfinals, then runruled Stigler 15-5 in the semifinals.
The Lady Bulldogs went 1-2 in Thursday’s one-day Sallisaw Tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs split their pool play games, edging Stigler 6-5 but losing 13-1 to eventual champion Pocola. In bracket play, the Lady Bulldogs saw the Vian Lady Wolverines use a five-run seventh inning to rally for a 13-12 win to knock Muldrow out of the tournament.
The Roland Lady Rangers went 0-3 in the tournament, falling 17-1 to Heavener and 11-1 to Eufaula, then were eliminated from the tournament with a 12-0 loss to Pocola.
In the tournament finals against Pocola, the Lady Wolverines (3-4) only mustered two hits — a single apiece by Akeelah Truett and Halli Russell. Rayleigh Terrill took the loss.
In the tournament semifinals against Stigler, a pair of three-run innings in the first two frames put Vian ahead 6-0. An eight-run sixth inning put the game into run-rule status.
For the game, Eastern Oklahoma State College signee Maisie Wells was 4-for-5 with a double, four runs scored and a run batted in, Russell was 4-for-5 with two doubles, three RBIs and a run scored, Hanna Matttingly was 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored, Kala Gibbins was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, LaKaila Drew was 2-for4-2 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored, Eden Girty was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored and Terrill was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Terrill got the win.
In the quarterfinals against Muldrow, Vian trailed 12-8 after six innings, but used a five-run seventh inning to get the come-from-behind win to keep from going 0-3 on the day.
For the game, Terrill was 3-for-4 with a double, Mattingly was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored, Gibbins was 2-for-5 with three runs scored, Drew was 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored, Russell was 2-for-5 with an RBI, Girty was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Kaidence Roark was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for Vian and Truett hit a solo homer for Vian. Terrill got the win.
In defeat, Danica Tune was 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and an RBI, Jaydin Dean was 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, Ryah Keenan was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Kaydence Young was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored, Cailey Grinstead was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Amaya Duran hit a two-run home run and scored twice for the Lady Bulldogs (1-2). Grinstead (1-2) took the loss.
In Vian’s loss to Eufaula, the Lady Ironheads rallied from a 2-1 third-inning deficit with a five-run fourth inning to take the lead for good at 6-2.
In defeat, Gibbins was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Drew was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored and Truett was 2-for-3 with three RBIs for Vian.
In Vian’s loss to Heavener, the Lady Wolves had a 12-6 lead in the fourth inning, but the Lady Wolverines responded with a three-run fourth inning and a two-run fifth inning to cut the deficit to 12-11 after five innings but got no closer.
In defeat, Gibbins was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, Wells was 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, Drew was 2-for-2 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs, Truett was 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Russell was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Vian. Terrill took the loss.
In Muldrow’s win over Stigler, the Lady Bulldogs used a five-run fifth inning to rally for a 6-3 lead after five innings. The Lady Panthers made things interesting with a two-run seventh-inning rally, but their rally came up a run short.
For the game, Tune was 4-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored, Amaya Duran was 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored, Keenan was 3-for-3 with a run scored, Ashley Price was 2-for-4, Amarie Duran was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBIs, Kaira Qualls was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Heidi McGuire was 2-for-3 and Young doubled with an RBI and a run scored for Muldrow. Grinstead got the win.
In Muldrow’s loss to Pocola, the Lady Indians jumped out to a 10-0 lead after an inning, and a three-run second inning put the game into run-rule status.
Muldrow only had five hits. Tune doubled and scored Muldrow’s lone run in the third inning, while Amarie Duran, Young, Dean and Grinstead all singled. Grinstead took the loss.
In Roland’s loss to Heavener, a fourrun second inning and a four-run fourth inning put the Lady Wolves ahead 8-0. A nine-run sixth inning put the game into run-rule status.
In defeat, Lilly Cole was 2-for-3, while Addyson Clark hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for the lone run for Roland. Kiah Pettit suffered the loss.
In Roland’s loss to Eufaula, a pair of five-run innings to begin the game put the Lady Ironheads ahead 10-0.
In defeat, Clark was 2-for-2 with an RBI single in the third inning to plate the game’s only run for Roland. Chloee Strong took the loss, lasting only twothirds of an inning. Pettit went the rest of the way.
In Roland’s loss to Pocola, the Lady Indians scored once in the opening inning, nine runs in the second inning and a run in the third inning to put the game into run-rule status.
Roland only mustered four hits, a single apiece by Cole, Kynlei Earnhart, Rain Honeycutt and Kyleigh Knapp. Pettit took the loss.
In the loss to Checotah, the Lady ’Cats jumped out to a 4-0 lead after an inning, but the Lady Rangers cut their deficit to 4-2 with single runs in the third and fourth innings but got no closer.
In defeat, Kynlei Earnhart was 4-for-4 with a double and a run scored, Addyson Clark was 2-for-4 with a triple, a run batted in and a run scored, Jaydance Bean was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Strong was 2-for-3 for Roland.
