Black Diamonds coaching duo honored by OWCA
Thanks to the Sallisaw Black Diamonds wrestling team’s success this past season, two of the coaching staff members were honored by the Oklahoma Wrestling Coaches Association.
Sallisaw Black Diamonds head coach Mark Smith was named the OWCA Class 4A Coach of the Year, while assistant coach Scott Mayfield was named the OWCA Class 4A Assistant Coach of the Year.
The Black Diamonds went 10-1 in this past high school wrestling season, made it to the Class 4A Dual State semifinals and saw 10 of their wrestlers make state, with two winning state titles — 150-pounder Cole Mayfield and 106-pounder Cason Craft — and two more placing — 165-pounder Bodie Adams as state runner-up and 215-pounder Noah Flores coming in third. The Black Diamonds also were honored for being the Class 4A state academic runners-up and finished third at the state tournament.
