Muldrow avenges district loss to Sallisaw
When the Sallisaw Lady Diamonds and the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs had their District 4A-6 rematch Tuesday evening in Muldrow, it was a battle to claim seventh place in the district.
The Lady Bulldogs avenged last week’s district road loss to the Lady Diamonds by getting a 5-3 victory.
The win improved the Lady Bulldogs to 9-17 overall and 2-9 in district play, with one more district game against Checotah that was slated for Thursday afternoon, while the loss dropped the Lady Diamonds to 3-16 and 1-11. Sallisaw’s final regular-season game was slated Thursday afternoon against Inola for Senior Night.
Trailing 1-0 in the opening inning, the Lady Bulldogs took the lead for good on an RBI single by Kaydence Young and a Sallisaw error for a 2-1 lead.
Danica Tune, one of four seniors — along with senior players Eve and Raya Keenan and manager Emmalee Short — honored after the game on Senior Night, hit a grounder on which an error was made that allowed Kynlee Thomas to score Muldrow’s third run for a 3-1 lead after two innings.
An RBI triple by Young and a passed ball produced two more runs for Muldrow in the fifth inning to increase the advantage to 5-1 after five innings.
The Lady Diamonds mounted a sixth-inning rally as a sacrifice fly by Channing Wilson, her second of the game, and an error produced two runs to cut Muldrow’s lead to 5-3 after six innings.
The Lady Diamonds got a lead-off single by Jaycie Cox to begin the seventh inning, who stole second base. After Muldrow pitcher Jaydin Dean struck out the next two batters, Cox was caught trying to steal third base to end the game.
Sallisaw took the early lead as Wilson’s first sacrifice fly scored Madison Green to put the Lady Diamonds ahead 1-0.
For the game, Young was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs batted in and a run scored for Muldrow.
Dean (7-8) got the win, striking out seven batters and throwing a fourhitter.
In defeat, Wilson singled with two sacrifice flies for Sallisaw.
