Wolverines entertain Antlers Bearcats in district home opener tonight
Vian football coach Gary Willis was waiting to see a full four quarters of football played by his Wolverines, and it would seem as if he got that as the Wolverines clawed the Spiro Bulldogs 64-6 in the District 2AII-4 opener last week at Spiro’s McClain Stadium.
Now, the Wolverines (4-0 overall, 1-0 in district play) will return home after being away from St. John Stadium since their 45-14 rout of Kiefer on Sept. 13 when Vian welcomes the Antlers Bearcats to town for a 7 p.m. contest tonight.
The ’Cats (1-3, 0-1) lost their district opener 49-12 to Valliant last week. Their only win was a 2-0 forfeit over Tishomingo on Sept. 20 when the Indians had to cancel the game and their homecoming festivities due to six male students during homecoming spirit week standing in line for a photograph of them displaying random Scrabble game letters that spelled out the n-word.
Antlers lost its first two games, losing 54-28 to Pocola on Zero Week on Aug. 30 at Pocola’s John Carter Field — where the Wolverines clawed the Indians 67-34 on Sept. 20 in the final non-district game of the season — and fell 28-26 in overtime in its home opener Sept. 6.
So far this season, the Wolverines have outscored their opponents 213-48. Vian has scored 60-plus points in each of the last two games, and is averaging just more than 53 points per game so far this season.
