Lady Diamonds shortstop signs with Eastern
Sallisaw Lady Diamonds shortstop Madison Green always wanted to follow in the footsteps of her sister, Megan (Green) Rogers, as well as fulfill a lifelong dream of playing college softball. The Lady Diamond senior made sure of both things when Green signed with Eastern Oklahoma State College in a signing ceremony Friday afternoon at Paul Post Field House.
“My sister Megan played (softball),” Green said. “She played (college softball), and I watched her play. It just made me want to follow her.”
Now that Green not only is following her older sister’s footsteps but also getting ready to live out her dream, she is excited.
“It feels nice,” Madison Green said. “I’m glad I can make my parents (Brian and Kelly Green) happy. I’m looking forward to it.”
First-year Sallisaw coach Wes Green always is glad when any of his players he has coached gets to make it to the collegiate level.
“It’s amazing,” the new Sallisaw coach said. “I’m so proud of Madi. I’m excited for her. It’s great to have one move on to the next level.”
It just so happens the signee and her Lady Diamonds’ coach are kin as she is the coach’s niece, which makes the Sallisaw shortstop’s signing even more special.
“I’m super proud,” Coach Wes Green said. “I’m glad for her to get to go on and play. I got to watch her in little league, travel ball and junior high (softball), and to be with her during her senior year was amazing.”
Madison Green said it was pretty much love at first sight when she visited the Wilburton junior-college campus.
“I was there, and basically the coaches just made me fall in love with it,” she said. “It’s small. There wasn’t a lot to overwhelm me. We live in a small town, and I’m going to another small town (Wilburton). It just felt like home.”
It also made the choice the right one since it’s close enough for the soon-tobe Lady Mountaineer to come home on occasions, but yet be far enough away to be on her own.
“It’s not too far away,” Madison Green said. “I wanted to be far away, but not too far away. I didn’t want to be too close (to home), but it’s still far enough (away).”
Right now, Madison Green will be playing her usual position, but that could always change.
“I’m going there as a middle infielder,” she said. “If they change it, then they change it, but I’m going there as a middle infielder.”
“That’s the plan — go in, work hard and earn a spot in the (starting) lineup, and enjoy herself,” Coach Wes Green said.
Madison Green is anxiously awaiting the start of her college career in the spring of 2026 after about a month of scrimmages next fall.
“I’m excited,” she said. “I’m very excited to step forward, move on and begin a new journey — and meet new people, and see how far I can take it.”
“She’s been a four-year starter for us at Sallisaw, and I’m sure she’s going to do great things at Eastern,” Coach Wes Green said. “We’re looking forward to watching her.”
