The old McKey School and community held their 84th annual cake walk and chili supper on Oct 5.
During the event, special recognition was given by Ora Lee Hobbs Kirk to Janice Blount Sanders and Jackie Snow Pop for their past dedicated 40 years, since October 1984, of the McKey community building’s maintenance, coordinating fundraisers of yard sales, bake sales, fried pie sales, and donation promotions for yearly building repairs, insurance, utilities, lawn care and school history pictures.
In honor of Jessie and Edgar Lowery and former teachers of McKey Grade School, 29 alumni reunions have gathered McKey alumni and families to capture 137 years of McKey, Okla., and McKey families into several history books in their school library, and copies in all alumni homes to share with future generations.
Janice, 78, and Jackie, 82, received their first eight years of grade school at the two-room McKey Grade School. Their parents and grandparents enjoyed grade school and church at McKey School building — the first school started in 1908.
Now in 2024, McKey families, and Janice and Jackie’s children and grandchildren enjoy the old school house with the red merry-go-round for family holiday dinners, birthday parties, wedding and baby showers, church services, and funerals.
The next generation is learning the reason and love of how to care for the old McKey school and community building through Janice and Jackie’s leadership. McKey, Okla., stands proud.
