Sallisaw wrestlers place at Warner Eagles Classic
WARNER — Several Sallisaw Black Diamonds and Lady Diamonds placed at the 2024 Warner Eagles Classic, which took place Nov. 25 at Warner Events Center, with six individuals winning titles.
In the high school boys division, Morgan Duke (126 pounds), Talon Flynn (165) and Rangler Carter (106) captured gold, while Emilie Robbins (155) and Taylor Archuleta (100) did so in the high school girls division and Elecktra Locust took first place at 180 pounds in the middle school girls division. Tilden Gates, wrestling at 106 pounds in the middle school boys division, also captured gold.
Morgan Duke, who received a bye, got a technical fall over Hilldale’s Wyatt Fletcher in the quarterfinals, a 7-0 win over Poteau’s Bentley Jackson in the semifinals and pinned Heavener’s Jerred Boss in 59 seconds in the title match.
Flynn won his first two matches by pinfall over Roland’s Lucas Younger in 1:34 in the quarterfinals and in 1:19 over Hilldale’s Daniel Carmichael in the semifinals, then beat Hilldale’s Alec Piedla by a 10-0 major decision in the finals.
Carter went 4-0, all by pinfall, to claim the 106-pound title in the high school boys division. Carter pinned teammate Johnny Nieto in 3:46 in the opening round, pinned Heavener’s Brycen Place in 1:13 in the quarterfinals, pinned Warner’s Cache Pohlsander in 20 seconds in the semifinals and pinned Heavener’s Riley McMullen in 28 seconds in the title match.
Nieto ended up being runner-up at 106 pounds. After losing to Carter, Nieto won his next three matches — beating Pohlsander by a 9-4 decision, pinning McMullen in 1:08 and getting a technical fall over Place.
Robbins won all four of her matches by pinfall, beating Fort Gibson’s Kaeleigh Thomas in 1:28 in the opening round, defeating Hilldale’s Keybenzi Gallegos in 42 seconds in the quarterfinals, beating teammate Mikaylynn Gaghins in 3:38 in the semifinals and defeating Jenks’ Shelby Correa in 3:19.
Gaghins ended up third at 155 pounds in the high school girls division. After getting an opening-round bye, she pinned Jenks’ Sheridyn Reeves in 10 seconds in the quarterfinals before losing to Robbins. Gaghins won her consolation semifinal match and third-place match by pinfall — pinning Hilldale’s Chloe Rubio in two minutes exactly in the consolation semifinals and pinning Hilldale’s Desie Grandstaff in 1:09 in the third-place match.
Archuleta won both of her matches by pinfall, beating teammate Hadlee McFarland in 18 seconds and Wilburton’s Raylee Cox in 1:09.
Hadlee McFarland was runner-up at 100 pounds in the high school girls division as she beat Cox by pinfall in 40 seconds.
Locust went 3-0 en route to her championship, winning all three matches by pinfall — defeating Bethel Middle School’s Rayne Medlock in 15 seconds, Van Buren (Ark.) High School’s Emmie Armstrong in 11 seconds and Bethel Middle School’s Kylee Jenkins in 36 seconds.
Tilden Gates, who got a first-round bye, pinned Morris Eagles wrestler Emmett Motten (40 seconds), Poteau’s Dawson Fruen (1:27) and Lincoln Christian’s Arion Stokes (5:48) to win the title.
Several other wrestlers were runnersup like Nieto and McFarland. In the high school boys division, Dawson Glover (144 pounds) was second as was Bailie Hanshew (130) and Paige Frederick (110) in the high school girls division along with Alicia Tarin (117 in the JH division), Melania Duke (110, JH girls), Briar James (155, JH boys), Kobe Johnson (126, JH boys), Mylz Oft (98, JH boys), Toren Gates (86, JH boys) and Mason Leach (80, JH boys).
Glover pinned Hilldale’s Riley Holman in 1:05 in the quarterfinals and pinned Wilburton’s Denver Patzack in 5:51 in the semifinals before losing to Poteau’s Jake Fredrickson 5-0 in the finals.
Hanshew pinned Poteau’s Yanelli Guzman in 4:52, lost to Hilldale’s Lynly Flud 10-2 and pinned both Warner’s Alexis McKee (1:45) and Morris Lady Eagles wrestler Paige Hall (29 seconds).
Frederick beat Bethel’s Ariel Velasquez 7-3 in her first match. After losing 10-4 to Poteau’s Jadyn Harper, Frederick pinned Heavener’s Jenna Scroggins (3:39) and Poteau’s Hadley Bryan (53 seconds).
Tarin pinned Warner Junior High School’s Symphony Kuykendall (1:18) and Van Buren JH’s Everlea Jordan (1:17) before being pinned in the title match by Fort Gibson’s Pippa McCall.
Melania Duke pinned Warner JH’s Emmi Hughey (22 seconds) and Poteau’s Aleja Kinnaird (1:37) before being pinned by Warner JH’s Cara Prock in the title match.
James pinned Van Buren JH’s Darian Fantauzzi in 5:16) and beat Morris Eagle Easton Bradley by technical fall before losing 10-2 to Poteau’s Judd Hebert.
Johnson, who got a first-round bye, pinned Prague’s Kace Smith in 15 seconds and got a technical fall over Hilldale’s Cale Spaulding before losing to Lincoln Christian’s Drake Sheffield by pinfall in the title match.
Oft got a first-round bye before getting a technical fall over Bethel Middle School’s Kaleb Perkins and a 13-0 major decision over Poteau’s Kannon Guillet before losing to Poteau’s Camden Cranfield 10-6 in the finals.
Toren Gates pinned Bethel Middle School’s Kadhen Perkins in 35 seconds and Poteau’s Vaylen Kinnaird in 35 seconds before losing the title match 8-1 to Lincoln Christian’s Zach Madrid.
Leach pinned Lincoln Christian wrestlers Tyler Smaligo in 1:26 and Ben Froehlich in 1:01 before losing 13-3 to Bethel Middle School’s Lukas Lomeli in the title match.
Six wrestlers came away with thirdplace finishes — Hagan Compton (heavyweight, junior high boys division), Cristina Dickens (145 pounds, junior high girls division), Kinlee Stone (117, JH girls division), Destiny Clarke (102, JH girls division), Sunny Gregg (96, JH girls division) and Gabriella McFarland (82, JH girls division).
Compton pinned Heavener’s Israel Rangel-Reyes in 1:09 before losing 8-3 to Wilburton’s Lariat Hammons and being pinned by Checotah Junior High School’s Gabriel Scarborough. Compton won his final match with a 14-3 major decision over Prague’s Brody Arthur.
Dickens lost 6-1 to Prague’s Peyton Snyder, beat teammate Kylee Wheat 8-7 and lost 10-2 to Van Buren JH’s Emily Burnett.
Wheat ended up fourth in the JH girls 145-pound division. After being pinned by Burnett and losing to Dickens, she got pinned by Snyder.
After losing by pinfall to McCall and getting a bye, Stone pinned Jordan (1:47) and Kuykendall (1:22).
Clarke, after getting a bye, lost by pinfall to Van Buren JH’s Bethani Martinez but ended up winning two straight matches by pinfall over Warner JH’s Yyitcel Ramirez in 1:23 and Van Buren’s Aria Robinson in 25 seconds.
Gregg was pinned by Hilldale’s Brooke Hopkins and Wilburton’s Alicia Phipps to end up third.
Gabriella McFarland finished fourth after pinfall losses to Poteau’s Autumn West and Warner JH’s Sapphire Bryan.
Baylee McEver (138 pounds, JH girls division), Riley Bridges (110, JH girls division) and Damion Martin (140, JH boys division) were fourth.
McEver went 2-2, losing to Checotah Junior High School’s Tylee Johnson by pinfall Heavener’s Jessie Perry, beating Van Buren JH’s Avery Rogers 9-6 and losing by pinfall to Poteau’s Gabriela Ortiz.
Bridges also went 2-2, pinning Warner JH’s Ragan Hubler in 41 seconds, losing by fall to Kara Prock, pinning Warner JH’s Gracelynn Mounger in 3:19 and losing by pinfall to Hilldale’s Brittan Phipps.
Martin, who got a first-round bye, pinned Van Buren JH’s Conner Holder in 59 seconds in the quarterfinals, but was pinned by Lincoln Christian’s Maddox Madrid in the semifinals. After pinning Stigler’s Britton Bishop in 3:59 in the consolation semifinals, Martin lost by pin to Poteau’s Dallas McKinney in the third-place match.
In the high school boys division, Brody Mills went 1-2 at 165 pounds before having to forfeit out of the tournament.
Lucas McAllister, wrestling at 126 pounds in the high school boys division, won his first two matches — 10-0 over Hilldale’s Gary Fox and 1-0 over Greenwood (Ark.) High School’s Ashton Neece — before having to forfeit out of the tournament.
In the high school girls division, Natalie Flute went 1-2 at 125 pounds, beating Wilburton’s Marlee Robbins in 43 seconds before losing by pinfall to Warner’s Carissa Prock and Morris Lady Eagle Hayleigh Frazier.
Kadence Martinez, wrestling at 120 pounds in the girls high school division, got a bye but lost by pinfall to Heavener’s Gracie Springfield and 8-0 to Poteau’s Kaidance Carnahan.
At 115 pounds in the high school girls division, Mattie Schuh went 3-2. Schuh pinned Greenwood’s Mariah Bartok in 46 seconds, got as bye, then beat Poteau’s Pukiya Chun in 3:45. However, Schuh lost by pinfall to Wilson (Henryetta)’s Macy Dobson and fell 6-0 to Warner’s Jayden Windrix.
In the middle school boys division, Tate Clawson (106 pounds), Adyn Mayo (112), Xander Montgomery (1120, Zane Eastham (126), Dylan Lee (195) and Hayden Barker (heavyweight) all competed, but did not place.
Lawson went 2-2, pinning Morris Eagle Jackson Hausner in 1:10 and pinning Lincoln Christian’s Leo Wright in 5:47, but losing 9-0 to Lincoln Christian’s Arion Stokes and losing by pinfall to Lincoln Christian’s Corde Williams.
Mayo beat Poteau’s Mannix Lum 9-6 but lost by technical fall to Lincoln Christian’s Easton Smith and lost by pinfall to Lincoln Christian’s Andrew Araskog.
Montgomery was pinned by Roland’s Kacen Copeland and lost 1-0 to Araskog.
Eastham lost by pinfall to Hilldale’s Kaiser Gray and to Prague’s Kace Smith, with a bye in between the two matches.
Lee, who got a first-round consolation bye after losing by pinfall to Van Buren JH’s Trenton Glover, beat Bethel Middle School’s Marshall Dority by a 9-1 major decision before losing 5-3 to Van Buren JH’s Jose Hernandez.
Barker, who got a first-round bye, was pinned by Poteau’s Hunter Montez and lost 5-3 to Roland’s Abram Nichols.
In the middle school girls division, 138-pound wrestler Bella Robbins lost by pinfall to Van Buren JH’s Avery Rogers before having to medical forfeit out of the tournament.
